Accessibility statement

What this statement covers

This statement covers the Backtracking web app: the sign-in pages, every page you reach once signed in, and the privacy, terms and accessibility pages. It does not cover receipts and other files you upload. We show those as you uploaded them.

The standard we work to

We are working towards level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 (WCAG 2.2). The service has not yet been checked by an independent auditor, so we do not claim it fully meets that standard. The issues we know about are listed below.

Known issues

  • Some menus in the page header stay open when you press Escape: the company menu, Records, and the menu under your name (More, on a phone). Select the menu's name again to close it. While one is open it can hide a control you move to with the Tab key (WCAG 2.4.11, Focus Not Obscured).
  • Some hints and instructions are set at 14 pixels, smaller than the 16 pixel size of the rest of the text. You can enlarge them with your browser's zoom.

How we test

  • Before any change to a screen ships, it gets a keyboard walk-through: every control is reached and used with the keyboard alone, and the focus outline is visible at every step.
  • Automated tests run before every change is merged. They check text and control colours against the WCAG contrast minimums, that checkboxes and radio buttons have a visible focus outline, that form fields have a visible edge, that buttons and links on the screens we measure are at least 44 pixels tall, apart from a few tracked exceptions, and that body text is at least 16 pixels.
  • We do not yet test with screen readers on each release.
